ABOUT NERO

Nero is the first and only wine to be made in South Africa from the Sicilian grape varietal called Nero d’ Avola.

This grape vine was brought in 20 years ago by Petrus Bosman of Bosman Wines when the phrase Climate Change began to rear its worrying head. While scientists, agriculturists and meteorologists were still pontificating on the effects of Climate Change, Petrus went in search of a grape cultivar that could withstand the hotter, dryer climate conditions predicted for their Wellington farm.

The volcanic island of Sicily seemed to have comparative terroir to the weathered granite soils and searing summer temperatures of their farm. So, he hopped on a plane and spent a harvest there, picking grapes, making wine and consulting oenologists at the University of Palermo.

There he discovered the grape cultivar Nero d’Avola. Planted prolifically, it consistently produces rich, bold wines. So he brought back cuttings to propagate in the Bosman Adama Vine Nursery. Eventually they were able to plant out a vineyard, wade through the red tape and produce their first Nero d’Avola in 2014.

Since then, Bosman Nero has fast gained notoriety. It is a wine that is designed to inspire a sustainable legacy through its innate quality.

THE BOSMAN BAKOENA PARTNERSHIP

“Our philosophy when making our wines, is that they should be good,” explains Petrus, “Good for those who pick the grapes, good for those who make the wines, and great for those who drink them. And so, we would like to spread that good news throughout the country.”

Fast forward to 2016, a partnership was formed between Bosman Family Vineyards and actor, producer and filmmaker Thapelo Mokoena, whose reach is far greater than their own, but whose vision and values are shared.

“Nero is proof that great ideas, when matched with courage and conviction, can become powerful movements. What began as a vision rooted in discovery and resilience has evolved into a proudly African wine brand with a clear purpose: to tell our story through world-class wine. From the outset, I wanted Nero to have a distinct voice and a strong African identity, one that resonates with South Africans first, while earning its place on tables across the world.

We believe Nero can become more than a wine. It can become a symbol of unity, excellence, and the limitless potential of our nation. A reflection of our people, our heritage, and the richness of our African soil. Bosman Bakoena Brands stands ready to champion that vision and share it with the world.”

– Thapelo Mokoena

Thapelo is well-known to many South Africans having starred in a number of blockbuster movies, drama series and TV commercials.

But his investment in South Africa is much more three dimensional. Also originally from a big farming family, his connection to the African soil is obvious and so he brings that sense of connection into his acting career to achieve widespread acclaim. That same attribute has created an ever-widening circle of friends who care and share his values.

“The synergy is clear,” says Petrus. “Both of us and our families are passionate about our roots, both family and African. We both strive to live healthy, productive lives and make a constructive impact on our wider communities. But we also appreciate art and beauty and culture and their importance in enhancing our lives and the lives of others.”

And so, the Bosman Bakoena partnership was formed and Thapelo Mokoena has become the icon of Nero, bringing the vision to life with his considered input from the vineyard, through the cellar and out into the marketplace.
