About NERO
Nero is the first and only wine to be made in South Africa from the Sicilian grape varietal called Nero d’ Avola.
This grape vine was brought into South Africa 20 years ago by Petrus Bosman of Bosman Family Vineyards. He realized that climate change would make their wine farm in Wellington, a hotter, drier place and so they needed to find a grape varietal that would continue to thrive under these conditions.
He found what he was looking for in Sicily, a volcanic island off the coast of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea. Its climate is similar to that in Wellington, and Nero d’Avola grapes do very well there. So it made sense that we could produce an excellent South African red wine here as well.
After a decade of navigating through red tape the first Nero was bottled in 2014 and since then, it has made a name for itself as a rich, bold red wine that challenges and excites.
NERO D'AVOLA - The Grape
If you love full-bodied dry red wines, then Nero is for you. Pronounced (“nair-oh davo-la”)
Sicily’s most prolific red wine variety is known to produce a full-bodied wine that is rich and bold. The vines produce huge glossy bunches of grapes that look luscious even in the middle of a February heatwave. The wine made from these grapes is generous and boasts lovely fresh berry flavours with hints of spice, firm tannins and a lingering finish.
