Bosman Family Vineyards has an 8-generation history of winemaking, coupled with an impressive transformation track record. Their inclusive business model deserves recognition in the wider South African context and what better way to take it to the next level than a collaboration with one of this country’s best-known actors Thapelo Mokoena, a passionate African perfectly aligned with Bosman’s innovative, sustainable approach.
To this end Bosman Bakoena Brands was formed, spearheaded by the innovative Nero brand, a wine made from the resilient Sicilian grape Nero d’Avola and produced exclusively by Bosman in South Africa.
Corlea Fourie has been making wine at Bosman Family Vineyards since the newly renovated cellar reopened in 2007. This multi-award winning winemaker is known for her thoughtful yet innovative approach to making wine. Always up for a challenge, Corlea has vinified this wine from the outset, intent on producing a dry, red wine that reflects its Sicilian origin, though in an African context.
The grapes were hand-picked, hand-sorted, destemmed and lightly crushed. The juice was allowed to macerate on the grape skins for 2 days prior to fermentation. After the onset of fermentation, regular punch downs extracted maximum colour.
The wine spent 3 weeks on the skins before being pressed. Barrel maturation lasted for 18 months in a combination of new French oak as well as older barrels. The best barrels of wine were selected and blended together to create a balanced, well-rounded dry red wine.
The Nero 2020 vintage is a shimmering ruby red colour with a purple rim. Aromas of lovely fresh red berries with hints of spice follow through to a generous palate with a luscious concentration of fruit, a good tannin structure and a lingering finish.
Serve with Italian tomato-based dishes such as lasagne or hearty red meat dishes such as a beef stew or barbecue-ed/braai-ed steaks or lamb chops.
Our one-of-a-kind icon red wine! This is made from a grape varietal that originates in Sicily, but was brought to South Africa by Petrus Bosman because it is tenacious and robust and thrives under the African sun. A showstopper of note!
